Dax ran into the house. He could hear voices coming through his radio, but they didn’t matter right now. He approached the victim of what was allegedly an act of random violence. The victim was on the ground bleeding out. He was conscious, but obviously losing awareness of the world around him quickly. “Sir, can you tell me what day it is?” Dax asked, but the only response that reached his ears was a groan. His team was fighting to bring a gurney into the room, but failing due to the narrow doorway.
Dax looked up and saw the woman who had made the phone call. “What happened?” he asked.
“I don’t know.” The woman stammered. “I heard gun shots and ran in to find my husband…” She stopped mid-sentence and began to sob. Dax noticed the woman kick a handgun under a dresser when he thought he wasn’t looking. He turned his focus back on the victim. He was fading quickly and nothing he did was helping to stabilize his condition. He was trying to stop the man from bleeding, but it seemed that one of the bullets had hit an artery.
He heard the sirens of the police cars that were coming. He slid his hand back up to the man’s neck. That was it, his pulse was gone. “Guys I need some help” He began CPR and watched as his comrades put together an air mask. The gurney finally made its way into the room followed by the rest of the paramedics. He wasn’t sure what was going through his comrades’ minds, but they seemed to be more focused on the gurney then the patient.
They shifted the man onto the gurney and Dax rode on top of the gurney continuing to force the man’s heart to pump. As they left the building, Dax called for one of the police officers that were now entering the building. He was ignored. He dismounted the gurney as they made it to the ambulance and let one of the other paramedics take over so he could rest a moment. It was only a moment’s rest, before he had to begin again so that the man could drive the ambulance.
About half way through the ride he stopped CPR. The patient was dead. Nothing they were doing could help him anymore and if anything they could do would save the man’s life, he would be brain dead from lack of oxygen. The rest of the ride he sat with his head hung. The darkness of the world had overcome this man. Whether he was or wasn’t a light for the world, the man did have the potential to become a light. Everyone had the potential, but when a life is cut short he never has that opportunity to change. The ambulance docked at the hospital, but no doctors met them. Instead they headed straight to the morgue. It was just another life that Dax had failed to save. He could however make sure that the woman didn’t do this again. He finished the paperwork required for reporting the man’s death then went and met a cop who had followed them for evidence. After a long discussion, Dax managed to tell exactly what the woman had done.
Dax left the hospital when he was done. That incident had thrown him well over the time for his shift. He went outside to a bench and sat letting his thoughts run wild. ‘This land of darkness has extinguished another life. What is it exactly when a person is creating darkness in darkness? When it is a person doing good it’s a light, but when it’s a person doing evil… It’s just wrong. Killing, no matter the reason is wrong.’ Dax let out a scream of anger. ‘Why couldn’t I save the man? If I am the only good in the world and I can’t make a difference then what is the point? When darkness devours everything, even darkness, how can one light fight it?’
“Why!” He screamed. This death had really shaken him. He was always upset when someone died while he was trying to save them, but that woman. Her eyes had peered into his heart and pierced it. Her eyes cried murder to him. She had no remorse for her actions and she tried to cover it up. She faked crying because she didn’t want to look like the bad guy. But she was. She was evil and sinister. No matter what the circumstances, killing wasn’t the answer. Dax caught himself as his eyes began to water. He couldn’t let himself remain so attached to random cases like this. He brushed away the tears and let his head hang again.
