Before the meteor hit the earth, the world was a modern place and life went on normally. Unbeknownst to many of the human inhabitants, there were other beings living amongst them and pretending to be human. The human population was well aware of certain areas of the cities being blocked off towards common traffic, and it was common practice to thus ignore them. Until the meteor crashes of 2012 occurred.

There were meteor crashes in the past, and with them had always come strange reports, but the reports and incidents had always been contained. This time, containment didn't work. Regular humans started developing powers, and thus came the emergence of other beings. Creatures that had only been known in mythical tales rapidly began to appear, and suddenly the blocked off areas of the cities were now accessible.

It rapidly became known to the common public that the contained meteor crashes in the past had led to the same development that was now occurring, and the beings beyond the Walls had similar powers that humans were now developing. But they were stronger and more powerful, and some were even regarded as deities, regardless if they took the form of a humanoid or another creature, as their very essences seemed to emanate only that which a god could have.
